The Necessity of Play

The course is relevant to OT practice as it explores the foundational OT theory linked to play, the role of the OT practitioner utilizing play as a medium for outcome progression, and the scientific relevance of play as an occupation to promote future generations.

Objectives:

1.     Define Play and OT’s role with play based therapy

2.     Explore the impact of play within different domains (physical, cognitive, and socioemotional)

3.     Apply principles of play based therapy within case studies

Speaker:  Sheina Farooqui, OTR  

Sheina Farooqui is the Program Director and full time faculty member at San Jacinto College OTA program. Her academic teaching is focused on development of clinical reasoning within all scopes of OT practice and clinical competency via the use of clinical case simulations. In addition to teaching, she works as a pediatric OT for the past seven years in the ICU, acute care, and outpatient settings with a focus on infant development, feeding, and sensory motor processing. Her passion lies in promoting health literacy both in the academic and clinical settings. She is a graduate of the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.
