Course Description:This discussion-based presentation will re-introduce the dynamic
role that occupational therapists play in the lives of people affected by H
IV when attempting to reduce and prevent falls. As HIV is now a chronic di
sease, people living with HIV face the challenges of aging at an accelerate
d pace. Occupational therapists offer a unique perspective to individuals
with this disease. Using principles of both occupational therapy and public
health, individuals with HIV can maintain their quality of life while agin
g with this disease. This discussion will offer useful strategies to combat
the factors associated with falls among people living with HIV. In additio
n, the participants will gain helpful strategies to address these issues wi
th patients in a variety of therapeutic settings.

Speaker Bio:
Amber has been an OTR for almost 11
years and is a public health educator and HIV activist. Her research includ
es health disparities research. Chronic HIV among marginalized populations
including African Americans and Latinos are her research interests. On the
clinical side, Amber is a neuro-OT who specializes in spinal cord injuries
and TBIs.
