Course Description: Dealing with difficult patients can represent a significant burden for a therapist. It is productive to view this as a product of the interaction between therapist & patient, in which both have a responsibility.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define a difficult patient
  2. Identify challenging behaviors
  3. Understand components of difficult encounters
  4. List the four categories of difficult clients per Groves
  5. Review successful skills in working with each client category and type of encounter
  6. Learn to use the CALMER approach
  7. Contrast Groves taxonomy with Osler’s Aphorisms
  8. Cultivate a curiosity that considers a patient’s dignity and humanity
