TITLE:   The Intersection between Human Trafficking and Occupational Therapy

DESCRIPTION:  An estimated 88% of victims reported encountering a healthcare professional during their trafficking experience. From acute to outpatient settings, professionals should be able to assess their clients for a current history of human trafficking and be prepared to respond with trauma-informed interventions and with the appropriate resources. 

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the program, participants will be able to:
1. Describe three typologies of human trafficking.
2. List three ways to identify victimization within healthcare settings.
3. State two principles on how occupational therapists can respond in a trauma-informed manner.
4. Identify at least two services/resources that are available in the community to assist victims of human trafficking.

PRESENTERS: 
Katherine Robichaux, MSW,
obtained her MSW in 2015, and has the following specialized training: Victim Service Tracking, and OVC TIMS; training in Trust-Based Relational Intervention (TBRI) and Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT). Ms. Robichaux is currently employed at Harris Health System as a Social Worker Case Manager II.

Erin Shirk, OTR, MOT is a Doctoral Student at UTMB's Post-Professional OTD program. She currently works as an Occupational Therapist II at Ben Taub NeuroPsychiatric Center and has an interest in teaching Occupational Therapist how to intervene and advocate for victims of human trafficking.
