Learner Objectives:

  1. Learners will demonstrate an understanding of the importance of collaboration in healthcare.

  2. Learners will demonstrate an understanding of strategies for developing a collaborative culture. 

  3. Learners will demonstrate an understanding of the value of interprofessional and intraprofessional education for OT practitioners and other healthcare providers.

  4. Learners will demonstrate an understanding of interprofessional and intraprofessional communication strategies and how each contribute to working in collaboration with others.

  5. Learners will describe interprofessional and intraprofessional collaborative care practice models.

Outline of the Program Content: Current healthcare trends are focused on decreasing cost and improving the quality of patient care. As the healthcare industry changes, OT practitioners and other healthcare practitioners must be prepared to meet these demands. This course is an introduction to concepts of Inter/Intra-professional collaborative healthcare. Included within the course are topics discussing the development of a collaborative culture, the value of inter/intra professional education, inter/intra professional communication, and collaborative models of practice. 

Application or Relevance to Occupational Therapy Practice: Occupational Therapy practitioners must be prepared to work in collaboration with a variety of healthcare providers. Those who demonstrate the ability to work effectively and efficiently inter/intra professionally can contribute to improved overall patient outcomes. In order to build the necessary skills for both interprofessional and intraprofessional practice and service delivery, OT practitioners and other healthcare providers must have an understanding of collaborative education and practice approaches.
