Title of the Workshop: The New Age of Cardiac Rehabilitation: Exploring OT’s role in Pediatric Heart Conditions

Presenter and title/credentials: Stefanie Rogers,  OTR, MOT

Stefanie Rogers, OTR, MOT, graduated from Texas Woman’s University in Houston in 2002 and has worked both in pediatric post-acute rehabilitation and acute-care settings. Her area of interest and practice has been the medically fragile child, early mobility, and educating others on the importance of neuroprotection and client-centered practice in the intensive care unit. She is currently a PhD student at TWU with a focus on researching and examining the current and potential role for occupational therapy in both congenital and acquired heart conditions, how those conditions can affect an individual throughout their lifespan, and the development of a pediatric cardiac rehabilitation protocol and program.

Learner Objectives:
1. The learner will understand common pediatric heart conditions, functional deficits that can occur throughout the lifespan, and difficulties with life transitions.
2. The learner will identify how pediatric heart failure affects the brain and cognition and the role of occupational therapy in assessment and intervention in both cognition and functional cognition.
3. The learner will identify occupational therapy’s potential role in a transactional approach to pediatric rehabilitation by promoting resiliency, self-advocacy, and success in life transitions through discussion of standardized clinical neuro-developmental and rehabilitation pathways and protocols.
